Having just made his debut for the Barcelona first team on Wednesday night, 19-year-old English prospect Marcus McGuane has revealed that he never spoke to Arsene Wenger during his 12-year stay at Arsenal.

The defender spoke to the Daily Mail about his experience with Wenger at Arsenal, “I didn’t have any conversations with him. I thought if I kept working hard, I would get opportunities. It didn’t come.”

“There’s no grudge but I felt the best thing was to find another way. If you want to be at a place to develop and get first-team football, maybe you have to look elsewhere than Arsenal.”

McGuane joined the latest in a list of young English talent seeking opportunities to play abroad, following the likes of Jadon Sancho, Reece Oxford and Ademola Lookman as well as former Arsenal youngsters Chris Willock and Kaylen Hinds.

The young player also opened up about young English players making the move abroad, stating “Before English footballers were less adventurous. Now we see opportunities elsewhere. Every manager has huge pressure to win trophies or you are gone. But we can’t be too scared to give youngsters opportunities.”
