Nike officially kick off a new era of drip on Merseyside by launching Liverpool’s hard 2020-21 home kit – a shirt that brings two icons of the game together for the very first time.
The game-changing new deal unites the reigning Premier League, European and Club World Cup champions with the Swoosh as part of a multi-year agreement. Ever since the partnership was announced, the first kit drop from the pair has inarguably been the most hyped release of the year – and they’ve kicked things off correctly with a clean debut design.
Liverpool’s new home kit features a traditional, bright red jersey, which is complimented with a new white and teal accent on the home jersey’s collar. Teal holds a further symbolic connection to the city of Liverpool through the Liver Birds that overlook the city – a constant part of the Liverpool Football Club jersey since 1892 – with the same colour expected to be used more prominently in the club’s away strip.
The home jersey is completed with a stylish V-neck collar, with the nape of the neck bearing the 96 emblem, encased by the eternal flames, sitting proudly in memory of the 96 children, women and men who lost their lives at Hillsborough.
The kit is also constructed with 100 percent recycled polyester fabric – made from recycled plastic bottles – with Nike’s wavey VaporKnit design providing peak performance innovation around fit and moisture management.
“I’ve been part of the Nike family for 6 years and we have an incredible relationship,” says defender Virgil van Dijk. “I’m very familiar with the quality of the design and innovation that goes into making a kit like this. Stepping out as champions next season in this kit will be really special.”
To celebrate the release of the shirt, Nike brought together Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson with the club’s coldest young ballers in Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott to don the new strip outside Anfield’s legendary Shankly Gates as they look to lead the club into the future.
The Swoosh also dropped the first pieces from the partnership’s wider training and lifestyle collection, including a retro-inspired white/red track jacket and a wavey black training shirt with a subtle monogram motif that will bang on the street and on-pitch.
