Brentford are reportedly considering terminating their shirt sponsorship contract with South African gambling firm, Hollywoodbets.

Though the partnership was set to continue after the 22/23 season, according to the Daily Mail, looming legislation on gambling reform drafted by Parliament will likely result in topflight English clubs undertaking voluntary bans on kit sponsorships with betting firms.

The news comes after Brentford striker Ivan Toney pleaded guilty to breaking FA gambling rules at the beginning of the month, though the club claims to have started the search for a new sponsor before Toney was initially charged back in December.

As is stands, there are currently seven other clubs in the Premier League with shirts sponsored by betting firms, including Newcastle United and Leeds United - both clubs are already considering ditching existing sponsors before new legislation comes into place. But despite the anticipated legal changes, Aston Villa recently agreed to a three-year contract with gambling brand BK8.

The presence of betting sponsors in football has remained controversial for some time, given the dangers of gambling addiction amongst fans - according to Gambling Commission in the UK it's estimated that 430,000 people suffer from compulsive gambling.

Football clubs are failing to carry out their duty of care when it comes to safeguarding fans - and players - from the pitfalls and dangers of gambling 'responsibly'.
