Mohamed Elneny opened Arsenal’s first-ever multi-faith prayer room for players at the Emirates in time for Ramadan.

The new prayer room made specifically for players was unveiled by the midfielder on 11 March, one day into the Islamic holy month. It follows the supporters’ prayer room at the stadium that was opened nearly 10 years ago.

On opening the space, Elneny said: “I am so proud to have opened our player prayer room at Emirates Stadium. Having this space to contemplate and pray will change the lives of future Arsenal players. I am really grateful to the staff and everyone involved in making this happen.”

In the last decade, more clubs have made efforts to support their Muslim players and fans, incorporating prayer rooms into stadiums, providing halal food options on a matchday and even offering fans the chance to celebrate Ramadan together with club-sponsored Iftars.

Islamophobia is ever-present in society, but as more English clubs create tailored spaces for their Muslim fanbase, players and employees, it only emphasises the fact that football is truly for everyone regardless of faith.
