The current wave of young English players moving abroad to get more playing time at foreign clubs could be getting nipped in the bud post-Brexit.

The Telegraph claims that players such as Jadon Sancho, Jonathan Panzo and Marcus McGuane would have had their moves abroad prevented if Britain had already withdrawn from the EU.

Current FIFA rules state that under-18 players cannot be sold to overseas clubs, with the exception being players aged 16 and 17, who can move to other clubs in the European Economic Area.

Players like Sancho and Reiss Nelson – who could now be classified as non-EEA players in the event of Brexit – could be granted special exceptions in order to remain, because they were EEA players when they were registered.

Though there are no restrictions in the top two divisions in Germany on foreign players, provided they are over 18, there are caps of non-EEA players in the top leagues in France (four), Spain (three) and a number of other European leagues, meaning that it could ultimately become more difficult for young English players to move abroad in the future.

In related news, Jadon Sancho recently received the player of the month award in the Bundesliga and got a huge upgrade on FIFA 19.
