Angel City FC wore shirts reading ‘Immigrant City Football Club’ before their home game against North Carolina Courage.

The club printed 10,000 shirts for the game, which also read ‘Los Angeles is for everyone / Los Angeles es para todos’ on the back. Supporters were handed these shirts after entering the BMO Stadium, while club staff also wore them.

Yaoziuatl Martinez, Angel City senior social media co-ordinator said: "'Immigrant City FC' points to the make-up of not just the city itself and how we represent it, but who our team is.

"Our team is made up of immigrants. Our staff is made up of immigrants. It's just very plainly reflecting what and who we are as an organisation."In the weekend prior, fans of Los Angeles FC held an ‘Abolish ICE’ banner in the stands and sat in silence throughout the 3-1 win over Sporting Kansas City.

As the lines between politics and football become more blurred, it is important clubs use their platforms and encourage players to speak out against the autocratic exclusion of disenfranchised communities. As the centerpieces of the beautiful game, their messages are most likely to catch attention.

More power to Angel City and Los Angeles FC for standing in solidarity with immigrants in LA and across the world. Here's hoping more teams follow suit.
