Major League Soccer is looking into a season calendar change that would see the league adopt a European-style schedule in the future.

The American league’s regular season currently runs from February to October, with playoffs commencing shortly after. The proposed change would see MLS action starting in August alongside most other leagues.

If the calendar does change, the MLS Cup playoffs will be held in May around the same time European leagues conclude.

The league has been holding meetings with clubs to discuss a potential shift, whilst gathering fan and player opinions through polls and focus groups.

There are some clubs that would be more receptive to the change, particularly those based in warmer cities and states. However, with the multiple climates that exist in the United States, harsh winters and inclement weather make the current set-up much more favourable for a large portion of teams.

At the moment, there are still a lot of hurdles for MLS to leap before anything becomes official. But the switch could happen as early as 2026 if the league does get the green light.

There’s always talk about the Americanisation of European football, but it looks like change is a two-way street nowadays.
