Birmingham City have announced the appointment of Hope Powell CBE as their Women's Technical Director.

The former Lionesses' manager will also join the Club's Executive Leadership Group in an attempt to drive success both on and off the pitch.

Powell most recently managed Brighton in the WSL but will be looking to offer her wealth of experience to push Birmingham back into the the top-flight of English women's football. The West Midlands side finished in second place in the Championship last season, a finish that's no doubt spurred them onto play in the big leagues once again.

One of the most iconic figures in the game, Powell was England's first black manager. She led England to four UEFA Women's European Championships and reached the 2009 final. She also took the side to two FIFA Women's World Cups as well as the London 2012 Olympic Games. Her technical resume also includes being a member of England's backroom staff at the most recent men's Under-20s World Cup.

Upon her appointment, Powell said: “I am excited to have the opportunity to join Birmingham City at the start of the journey. Birmingham was a powerhouse when the WSL was formed. I am looking forward to putting in place the building blocks so that it can compete once again at the highest levels, both in England and then across Europe."
