Twitter has revealed which sports stars got the UK talking in 2017.

After a year which saw the richest fight in all of combat sports, Neymar becoming the most expensive football player of all time and Anthony Joshua arriving as the new face of boxing, there's been no shortage of talking points.

In an unsurprising outcome, Conor McGregor tops the list as Twitter's most talked about athlete in the UK over the past year with Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku finished in second and third place respectively.

The list proves that football still dominates the sports agenda in the UK, with McGregor and his adversary Floyd Mayweather being the only non-footballers to make the list.

The place of Jose Mourinho (4th) and Arsene Wenger (10th) on the list shows that the cult of the manager is still very much alive, while Cristiano Ronaldo (8th) beats Leo Messi, who doesn't make it onto the list at all.

Twitter's 10 most mentioned athletes in 2017:
