Inter Milan and AC Milan are looking to build a new joint stadium, replacing San Siro as the clubs’ home since the early 20th century.

The future of San Siro has been up in the air for some time now, with the clubs initially looking into building a new stadium, separate stadiums and eventually trying to renovate the iconic ground. However, the renovation of the stadium has been deemed financially unfeasible.

The original plan of building a new ground is underway once again, with the clubs taking steps to buy the land surrounding the original stadium. AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale has expressed interest in creating an American-style stadium that can double as a live event space, hosting concerts and other sporting events to generate revenue.

If the clubs do get the green light to build a new stadium, they would become the owners of the old San Siro. The legendary ground has been designated a site with exceptional ‘cultural interest’ so it can’t be demolished, but it will be repurposed in the future.

A new stadium in Milan would be the first built in Italy since 2011 with Juventus’ Allianz Stadium. As the culture around football grounds changes, with bigger and better stadia being built across the world, it’s time for Italy to change with the times. Leave it to the Milanese to usher in that new era.
