Seattle Reign is set to retire former player and club legend Megan Rapinoe’s No.15 jersey, with a commemorative ceremony marking the event later this season.
Rapinoe joined the club for the Reign’s inaugural season in 2013, lifting the NWSL Shield three times as well as the Women’s Cup with the Seattle club. She holds the club’s records for both goals and assists, and is the first NWSL and Reign player to have their jersey number retired.
Seattle Reign’s General Manager Lesle Gallimore said: “The number 15 jersey will forever be remembered for not only the person who wore it, but for everything and everyone she represented along her journey with the club,”
“Megan Rapinoe's legacy and the retirement of her Seattle Reign FC jersey, the first in club history, is fitting, deserved, and hopefully a reminder to everyone that we were fortunate to witness her time here.”
Shirt numbers don’t get retired every day, and they’re even less common for women ballers. However, what Rapinoe’s legacy means to Seattle Reign and the NWSL as a whole is more than deserving of the ultimate recognition.
The Reign will officially retire the shirt number during a celebration held on 25 August as Seattle Reign takes on North Carolina Courage at Lumen Field.
