NWSL soccer is set to arrive in the Bay Area, with a new team joining the league starting in the 2024 season.

With USWNT legends Brandi Chastain, Leslie Osborne, Danielle Slaton and Aly Wagner will lead a majority female board as the team’s founding advisors.

The news comes following confirmation of the Utah Royals’ return to North American women’s soccer in 2024, as well as a potential Boston-based team.

Since beginning the current expansion process in 2019, the league has introduced three new clubs, including Racing Louisville FC, San Diego Wave and Angel City FC - the latter teams are based in Southern California.

NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman said: “We said at the start of the expansion process in July 2022 that we would be intentional in seeking out strong markets and ownership groups that not only had the structural integrity for our league to thrive, but also demonstrated a genuine commitment to investing in and creating first-rate organisations on and off the pitch.”

“I am confident that this ownership group and market will help us deliver on the league’s continued transformative growth and success and look forward to watching the Bay Area club kick off in 2024.”

With fans in their tens of thousands packing out venues routinely in the NWSL, it's no wonder the league is expanding and bringing new teams into the fold. And who knows what next gen talent they'll find in Northern California?
