Nike‘s presence at Art Basel Miami is always welcome, but with the worlds of football and fashion converging ever closer there aren’t many brands who can so easily facilitate connection between the two.
Alongside the plethora of programs at the weekend show, Virgil Abloh’s “Soccer Jersey Culture’ workshop saw the Off-White honcho discuss the connection between his brand and football.
According to KTTP, Abloh said at the event: “Both my parents are from Ghana/West Africa and anyone who knows that region the sport that you naturally fall into is soccer. At the age of four, my dad was like this is what you do…I played soccer all the way through High School.”
The workshop in Miami Beach saw Abloh lead a class of around 50 people, including rapper Fat Joe, helping to customise their own Nike football jerseys. Later, after the session, Abloh, Skepta and friends of the involved parties played a 7-a-side football match on Brickell’s Soccer Rooftop.
