Former Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kanté has agreed terms to take control of Royal Excelsior Vitron.

R.E. Vitron currently resides in the third tier of Belgian football having recently been relegated after missing out on survival by just one point.

The Belgian side are in the process of regaining their professional license, and will play in the Belgian National Division 1 in the 2023-24 season.

Kante will be at the head of the rebuilding job at Stade Yvan Georges, taking over from former Chairman, Flavio Becca.

In an official club statement, R.E. Vitron explained how all debt had been relieved by their departing owner and that the club fully welcomes the appointment and involvement of Kanté in their ambitions to play in the top tier of Belgian football.

“Driven by his passion for football, the will of N’Golo Kanté is to continue the structuring of the club in order to consolidate its foundations, stabilize the staff and eventually reconnect with the tradition of training R.E. Virton, via its Youth Academy.

“The club aims to establish its local roots in order to become a driving force in football in Gaume and in the province of Luxembourg.”

The club may not have been blessed with many stars over the years but one player on the books is former Aston Villa man Yacouba Sylla. And with the backing of World Cup winner Kanté, who knows what footballing gems might be unearthed in the near future.
