FIFA are set to introduce 'Ref Cam' as part of this year's Club World Cup.
The technology offers a new viewing experience for fans around the globe. With referees at the heart of the action, broadcasters will have access to footage, giving people a front-row seat to key moments at this summer's tournament.
FIFA's announcement comes after previous trials across grassroots games in England, which showed a decrease in abuse directed at match officials as a result of them wearing the new technology. The move to the professional stage comes with the hope of bringing fans closer to the game while also offering a new way to evaluate decisions and educate current and future referees.
This won't be the first time 'Ref Cam' has been implemented at the top level, though. Last season's Premier League game between Crystal Palace and Manchester United in May, saw match officials wear the bespoke cameras as part of a documentary featuring referee Jarred Gillett. Other leagues have tested them too, and this weekend's Der Klassiker between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund is reportedly set to use the technology.
While steps have been made to make the decision-making process more transparent, referees still are subject to game-wide scrutiny every week. As time goes on, the broader introduction of 'Ref Cam' can hopefully help address this disconnect, and allow fans to quite literally see things from their perspective.
