The NBA and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly in talks to form a basketball franchise.
According to Le Parisien, the move comes as the NBA is looking to expand into Europe, with a rumoured launch happening in 2026/27. Paris is one of several cities mentioned, including London, Barcelona, Manchester and more from across the continent.
The club’s owners, Qatar Sports Investment, are said to have had two proposals tabled, which could see either the acquisition of an existing Parisian side or the creation of a new side involving external partners and investors. One contender could be ‘Paris Basketball’ — a team founded in 2018 — who are currently sitting mid-table in the EuroLeague and third in LNB Élite.
While this would be a new step, brushing shoulders with basketball is nothing new for them. An obvious connection is their ongoing partnership with Nike’s ‘Air Jordan’ line, but last year saw NBA star Kevin Durant became a minority stakeholder in PSG when Arctos Partners bought a 12.5% share in the club. Now, however, the tables have turned.
PSG creating a basketball franchise would see them follow in the footsteps of other clubs, such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and more. The Ligue 1 side already operates as a ‘multi-sport club’, with teams in eSports, judo, and handball, who have won the French championship ten times.
While further details are yet to emerge, this move could be the tipping point for something much bigger.
