Travis Scott and Nike are taking us back. The Mad Maximus arena was built specifically to host Southern California’s best ballers at Coachella, and it’s making us feel a certain type of way. Elimination cage tournament. Silver ball. Total 90s. This is Nike Football ‘eritage.
Inspired by the iconic Nike ‘Secret Tournament’ ad from 2002 – also known as ‘Scorpion KO’ or ‘The Cage’ – Thierry Henry, R9 and Francesco Totti took to the pitch to flex their skills in anticipation of the World Cup in Japan and Korea. Except this time, instead of Eric Cantona, Travis himself was Master of Ceremonies.
This is the second tournament the Swoosh has hosted in quick succession. We saw Edgar Davids ball out at the ‘Secreto Maximus’ street football tournament at ComplexCon’s ‘Cactus Colosseum’ back in October, and now America’s biggest festival played host to some of SoCal’s tekkiest.
Players turned out in a range of Total 90 III, including the unreleased gold and white colourway. But there were no sightings of the much-heralded ‘Cactus Jack’ Nike Air Zoom Mercurial boot. With Travis Scott’s impending feature as a sponsor of FC Barcelona’s shirt at next month’s El Clásico, it goes without saying the beautiful game is more lit than ever.
