Virgil van Dijk has unveiled a new youth tournament, working with some of football's biggest academies to inspire the next generation of players wanting to reach the top levels of the game.
‘Virgil’s Legacy Trophy’ will take place at the defender’s first academy club, Willem II, and aims to give young players a taste of the top. It will feature 16 elite-level academies including Liverpool, Ajax, PSG and Arsenal, as well as clubs of the defender’s past such as Groningen, Celtic and Southampton.
The tournament will kick off in September this year with the group stages being held at Willem's academy facilities and the finals taking place at the first team's stadium. A unique opportunity for any U13s player to experience let alone with one of the best defenders watching from the stands.
In a recent statement about the launch of the tournament, van Dijk said: "I feel strongly about inspiring others and want to give the next generation of players a proper platform to perform. The best pitches, facilities and officials".
Further details are yet to be announced regarding tickets and access to the 'Virgil's Legacy Trophy', but more information can be found on the tournament’s website.
