Athens Kallithea are reusing their 2024/25 kit collection next season as a way to prevent textile waste and overproduction.

Despite kit manufacturers shifting to sustainable textiles, football’s carbon footprint is bigger than ever before. With the sport becoming fast fashion’s longest-lasting microtrend and clubs releasing four or more kits each season, the global production of kits and merchandise is having a negative impact on the environment.

Athens Kallithea have solidified themselves as one of the leading clubs when it comes to football-fashion, releasing some of the most stylish kits the sport has seen in recent years. Now, as one of the biggest influencers in the game, they are making an effort to change football’s footprint for good.

Ahead of next season, Kallithea are restocking the previously sold-out 2024/25 collection, with all three kits available in both the short and long-sleeved versions. The jerseys will be rebranded as the 2024/26 collection to reflect the change.

Though it was the norm back in the ‘90s, it’s rare for clubs to wear the same kits over multiple seasons in this day and age. Brentford has made waves for doing this as part of a greater push for sustainability at the club, but outside of the Bees, no other clubs have made the change.

It seems like a minor change, but with the amount of product clubs churn out year after year, long-lasting kit collections could have a major impact globally. Here’s to more clubs making efforts to make football more sustainable in the future.

The 2024/26 collection is available to purchase now on the Athens Kallithea website. The kits will be available at the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens starting in April.
