English football players are demanding Twitter permanently delete accounts after a single racist post and commit greater resources to identifying abuse.

The PFA has issued a statement saying that immediate action needs to be taken, with “sufficient resources dedicated to identifying and removing offending posts without delay”, and "better links with the police and football authorities" regarding the issue.

The statement is in response to Twitter's claim that it had had “taken action on more than 700 examples of abuse and hateful conduct related to UK football," despite the lack of clarity over what action was specifically taken. The PFA is now demanding more transparency in the process, saying that players need to be informed: “the offending account has been permanently suspended.”

This season has seen in a dramatic and disgraceful rise in racist abuse directed towards players from Twitter accounts, with the likes of Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Tammy Abraham, Troy Deeney just a few of the high-profile players subject to racism from profiles on the platform.

Kick It Out is set to meet CPS and police to step up the pressure on Twitter over racist abuse, with the anti-discrimination body demanding ‘concrete change’ to crack down on the offenders.
