Drake has proved an unlikely source in saving everyone's favourite fashion-forward football club, Venezia FC, from the brink of bankruptcy.

According to GQ Italia, the Canadian rapper proved vital in ensuring the team wasn't automatically relegated to Serie D, the fourth division of Italian football, after working alongside Venezia co-owner Brad Katsuyama to raise $40 million to keep the club afloat.

Drake's chief brand officer, Matte Babel, who works on his management team spoke of the deal: "I got a call from Brad (Brad Katsuyama, a Venezia co-owner) a close friend of mine. He laid out the problem, simply - Venezia needs to raise ten million euros in a couple weeks, and then at least thirty million euros in a few months, or the club will go bankrupt."

"Venice is an incredible city and Venezia has always been a special club, I spoke to Drake, then Brad and I discussed how we could help. Within two weeks we settled on terms, and raised the money needed to make payroll and avoid bankruptcy."

The rapper and a group of North American investors stepped in earlier this year to remedy the situation, and by the end of the season saw the team achieve promotion back to top flight football in Serie A. This new ownership group has now formed an Operating Committee (OpCo) to oversee the strategic direction of the club with a long-term goal of building Venezia FC into a global contender."

The value of Drake to any football club is undeniable given his global superstardom and brand reach - this intersection of culture and sport is exactly where we want to be and as a sports organisation the ability to tap a brand like NOCTA that also teeters the same line is incredibly valuable, said Katsuyama.

Prior to the announcement of their new ownership, rumours had already began swirling that their transformational technical partnership with Kappa had come to an end, and surprisingly to some, Drake's NOCTA label was set to take the reigns.

It's clear their new kit partnership is part of a wider sea change at the club, which beckons a brand new era for the Venetians. After suffering more than a few sink or swim moments, could we now see the club flourish on the world stage.
