AIK made history by becoming the first football club in the world to be designated as an official religion by the Swedish government, and their latest limited-edition kit drop with Nike blurs the lines between fandom and faith.
Weekend congregations, shared hymns in the stands and sacred symbols are at the heart of every fanbase, and in AIK’s case, even the lawmakers know that. With AIK-devoted fan group Vår Svartgula Sal officially being recognised as a religious community, the club had to honor that with a special creation rooted in their history.
The ‘Smokinglirare’ kit is a blacked-out masterpiece. The name nods to AIK’s heritage and Tuxedo Squad nickname stemming from their elegant style of play and on-pitch appearance – a mentality that still exists at the club today.
Details on the monochrome jersey are infused with metallic particles, creating a shimmer effect against the velvety black base. The classic Nike logo the brand uses for all of AIK’s special kits is stitched in black and silver, matching the colour combo of the club crest.
In lieu of a shirt sponsor, ‘1891’ takes centre stage – a nod to the club’s founding year.
Keeping up with the sanctity of the jersey, only 134 shirts will be available to purchase. Season ticket holders will get first dibs, able to register interest in the kit between February 14-16. A raffle will determine who gets a chance to cop the club’s newest holy relic.
All of the surplus from shirt sales will be donated to Stadium Sports Camp, a non-profit organization giving underprivileged children access to sports.
