Liverpool has released its new home kit for the 2023/24 season, inspired by Bill Shankly’s last season in charge of the Reds 50 years ago.
Drawing on the white collars and cuffs of the 1973/74 kit that saw Shankly’s Liverpool win the FA Cup, the modern recreation mimics the era’s simplicity. The sleek red and white shirt features the number ‘97’ between eternal flames on the back of the neck in memory of those that lost their lives in the Hillsborough Disaster.
In line with both the club’s ‘The Red Way’ sustainability programme and Nike’s ‘Move to Zero’ campaign, the kit is entirely made out of recycled polyester. The names and numbers, inspired by Liverpool’s historic street signs, are printed with water-based inks as a more sustainable alternative.
Keeping with the spirit of the decade, players were styled in aviators and funky trousers. An accompanying video saw players from both the men’s and women’s team transported to the ‘70s through a vintage photo booth.
The club will debut the new kit at Anfield for the final match of the season against Aston Villa.
The shirt is available to pre-order now on Liverpool’s online store.
