West Ham have released “Ómarsson” – a documentary following captain Dagný Brynjarsdóttir's pregnancy journey and the struggles she faced as a professional footballer choosing to start a family whilst playing.

The film is an incredibly personal and intimate portrayal of Brynjarsdóttir as she navigates pregnancy and motherhood as a professional athlete. The documentary looks back at a handful of special moments from earlier in Dagný’s career, including her time at Portland Thorns and the birth of her first child, Brynjar.

With the main focus being on her pregnancy up until the birth of her second child earlier this year, viewers get a close look at the support Brynjarsdóttir received from West Ham during her pregnancy, as well as her motherhood journey.

Footage from her gender reveal at the Chadwell Heath training ground last year, as well as special moments she’s shared with Brynjar at the club tug at the heartstrings whilst showing the supportive environment Brynjarsdóttir has been surrounded with.

Motherhood and pregnancy in professional football isn’t a topic that pervades the general public very often, and certainly not in this format. “Ómarsson” is a powerful film that can generate those conversations and create a culture in women’s football where pregnancy, motherhood and football is supported across the board.
