Ella Toone and Alessia Russo just became two of the only active pro players in English football to start their own podcast.
The Lionesses duo – who also previously shared the pitch together at Manchester United – are one of the game’s most famous friendships, and they’ll link up with Vick Hope for a new podcast on BBC Sounds.
‘The Tooney & Russo Show' will take listeners inside the world of pro football and the off-pitch lives of two of the game’s very best. This isn’t the first BBC Sounds podcast spotlighting two elite level players, following on from Callum Wilson and Michail Antonio’s ’Footballer’s Football Podcast’ which launched in 2021.
In recent years we've seen more retired players appear and launch their own media platforms, from the likes of Gary Neville’s ‘The Overlap’ to Ian Wright’s ‘Wrighty’s House’. While it’s more common in the US for active athletes to become content creators, this isn’t something we’ve seen en masse in European football.
As we continue to move towards a football culture that champions players as people, with fans wanting insight into their lives and personalities like never before, this show will provide an opportunity for fans to obtain that deeper level of connection.
‘The Tooney & Russo Show’ launches via BBC Sounds on April 29.
