A documentary on some of football’s biggest stars - the Lionesses - has been commissioned ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

According to Sportsmail, fans will able to follow the journeys of several players heading to Australia and New Zealand in a “unique series”.

The docuseries will follow players in the build up to the tournament and take a behind the scenes look into the lives of some of the top names in the women's game, with several episodes even set to air before the tournament kicks off. The remaining episodes will be released once the competition is complete.

A host of networks are reportedly believed to be interested in airing the show, with the BBC, ITV, Amazon and Disney+ all fighting for the rights to platform what is set to be both an entertaining and insightful series. And to top it off, POW TV STUDIOS - the production company behind bringing the show to life - are partnering with Reese Witherspoon’s production house, Hello Sunshine, in an all-female line-up.

This certainly isn't the first docuseries released about women's football. Just last year Amazon Prime aired a docuseries on two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas, and in the run-up to the Euros former Arsenal and England defender, Alex Scott, released 'The Future of Women's Football' in partnership with the BBC.

Yet what this upcoming release does tell us is, more people than ever want to know who these players are and what happens behind the scenes, both on and off the pitch. More than that, hugely successful and reputable production houses, broadcasters and streaming platforms are willing to fight for the right to air these shows - something we've never really witnessed before in the women's game.

England are currently one of the favourites to win the World Cup as a result of their historic winning Euros campaign last summer. And although they'll give it everything to take home the biggest prize in football, one thing is guaranteed if this series goes live: we're in for a show regardless.
