Image visa Getty Bukayo Saka has donated shelter to those affected by Morocco’s most powerful earthquake for over 100 years, which killed almost 3,000 people in September. The Arsenal winger linked up with BigShoe, a charity helping children from disadvantaged communities, to donate 50 container apartments for families in the particularly hard-hit provinces of Al Haouz and Taroudannt. These were then used to build a container village, providing new homes for those in need. Each container has a sleeping area, kitchenette, bathroom with a washbasin, toilet and shower, as well as power sockets and protective grills in case of future earthquakes. The container village will provide refuge for 255 people. In November 2022, Saka – son of Nigerian parents – also worked with BigShoe to fund operations for 120 Nigerian children suffering from diseases such as brain tumours.Saka said he hopes “the 255 people and, above all, the 89 children in the containers can regain a piece of their everyday lives.”Many footballers come from unforgiving circumstances and have had to battle their way out to make a name for themselves and their families. This is why it’s so refreshing to see Saka give back in the way that he does. To make it as a footballer is to remember those around the world who are not as fortunate. That is a responsibility Saka has taken in his stride.
