VERSUS and Alzheimer's Society are coming together to immortalise our most iconic England national team memories in a new zine called 'Unforgettable Football', marking the England vs Australia Alzheimer's Society International fixture on April 11.
Part of football’s eternal magic is its ability to make memories that last a lifetime. Whether you’re stepping onto the pitch yourself, making a pilgrimage to the stadium on matchday, or watching your heroes at home; the beautiful game is a cacophony of sights, sounds and smells that hold a place in our heart long after the moment has passed.
But memories don’t always last forever. Dementia is the biggest health and social challenge of our time. 900,000 people are currently living with dementia in the UK, whilst one in three people born today will develop it. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of the disease, with memory loss often showing as one of the first symptoms.
Alzheimer’s Society works towards building a world where dementia no longer devastates lives, providing resources and support to those who are affected by the disease, whilst also funding research into the science trying to find a solution.
With their work on the frontline, they know that football remains one of the subjects that most commonly registers love, laughter and a smile from those who live with dementia. Football is just unforgettable.
Ahead of the Lionesses’ game against Australia on April 11 – a fixture staged in association with Alzheimer’s Society – we’ve linked up with some of the most important faces in football culture and helped them immortalise their favourite England memories in print.
From captaining your country to watching the match that made you fall in love with the sport, each story is an intimate and personal look at the way football makes us feel.
