England full-back Danny Rose has said the England dressing room was "over the moon" to see Raheem Sterling criticise the media's portrayal of black players and that the Man City forward was "spot on" in his analysis.

Sterling was racially abused by a fan while playing at Chelsea in December, and his eloquent response saw the 24-year-old accurately critiquing newspapers who helped "fuel racism" and the way they portray young black footballers by comparing the treatment of his two Man City teammates Phil Foden and Tosin Adarabioyo.

The Tottenham defender spoke to BBC Sport before England kick off their Euro 202 qualifying campaign this Friday against the Czech Republic, "Raheem was only saying what we all say in the dressing room. It's sad really but he's 100% spot on with what he said. The stick he used to get from the media was bang out of order. When he put the [Instagram] post up about the media we were all over the moon with that because we all agree. Fair play to Raheem."

Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi recently made the step up to Gareth Southgate's squad for the qualifiers, but the 18-year-old was the latest England player to face racist abuse while playing for Chelsea at Dynamo Kiev in the Europa League on Thursday, and Rose also commented on the incident by saying more needs to be done by the relevant authorities.

"I was only reading this morning about what Callum had gone through. It will not be solved overnight. There will be one or two further cases in the future before we get to a solution. I wouldn't like to say I don't have faith in the authorities to deal with it as that would be worrying but it is sad. I hope Callum has not been affected by it and if ever he needs to talk, I'm here."

While continuing to do important work off the pitch, Raheem Sterling is also setting his sights high with his efforts on-field – and is targetting winning the Ballon D’or in the future.
