Millwall is leading the charge with their ‘no-flight’ policy, joined by Forest Green Rovers, Bristol City, Bristol Rovers, Swindon Town and Mansfield Town – with more potentially joining in the near future. The charter was created by the six clubs, the Football Supporters’ Association and football charity Pledgeball, and will help clubs explore and implement environmentally friendly travel policies. This sustainability pledge comes after football clubs have come under fire for short-haul domestic flights. Research found that Premier League sides took 81 domestic flights in 100 matches over a two-month period.Football’s carbon footprint is immense, and while some clubs are making efforts to do their part in reversing the sport’s negative environmental impact, the issue of domestic flights and individual clubs’ carbon output is one that needs to be addressed.
