Cole Palmer has reportedly applied to trademark his signature ‘shivering’ goal celebration and ‘Cold Palmer’ nickname, with plans to sell merch in the works.

Palmer won’t be the first baller to add some fine print to his goalscoring form. David Beckham has trademarked his surname, as well as DB07 and DB23. Kylian Mbappé secured global rights to his image with his crossed-arm celebration, and Gareth Bale’s shirt number and heart symbol were registered alongside the 'Eleven of Hearts' brand.

With his application including a video of his celebration, Palmer is taking steps to protect his intellectual property. Fake merchandise and sellers looking to make a quick buck off of popular players have become rampant recently. By registering with the government’s IP office, he’s reclaiming his name and likeness to be used and monetised on his own terms.

The Chelsea star had a breakout season to remember, with 33 goals and assists last season – and one of the most popular goal celebrations in the world. After the icy cele became a habit, the name ‘Cold Palmer’ followed suit and the internet has been lapping it up since.

With players around the world channeling their inner CP, from Angel City’s Alyssa Thompson to Brazil’s Kerolin at the 2024 Olympics, the celebration has spread like wildfire in less than a year.

Though the trademark isn’t official yet, the merch possibilities are endless. Here’s to pre-match meals at the Cold Palmer chippy in the future.
