Le Coq Sportif has filed for bankruptcy, with all major kit deals and partnerships ending immediately as a result.
The French brand is one of the biggest names in European sportswear, kitting out some of the biggest nations and clubs during the 20th century.
Before adidas, Nike and PUMA asserted their dominance in the football space, there was Le Coq Sportif. The brand was behind memorable kits for Argentina, Chelsea, PSG, Santos and more in the ‘70s and ‘80s, with the iconic rooster logo highlighting World Cup wins and domestic trophy triumphs.
The ‘90s saw the brand take over English football with partnerships covering the country from QPR and Bournemouth to Sheffield United.
Most recently, Le Coq Sportif was France’s official technical sponsor at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, joining forces with Pigalle’s Stéphane Ashpool to design some of the best garms of the Games.
Now, pushed to the financial brink, another chapter has closed and it’s time to say goodbye to an icon. The streets will never forget that Argentina 1986 kit.
