FIFA has officially opened a disciplinary investigation against Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales, following his actions at the Women’s World Cup final.
During the medal presentation ceremony, Rubiales kissed Jenni Hermoso on the lips and has since been the subject of widespread scrutiny online and in the media. Hermoso stated she did not enjoy the kiss, causing Rubiales to issue a lukewarm apology the day after.
Before the non-consensual kiss, the RFEF president also celebrated Spain’s win over England by grabbing his crotch. Both actions are being looked at as they could be violations of FIFA’s disciplinary code. The severity of any punishment issued if he is found to violate the code hasn’t been revealed yet.
The investigation is just another sad chapter in a long saga between the Spain women’s national team and the RFEF. After a dispute over coach Jorge Vilda’s treatment of players and his coaching style in 2022, 15 players boycotted the national team.
The RFEF controversially sided with Vilda, and 12 of those players have not represented Spain since. Only three of the original 15 – Aitana Bonmatí, Ona Batlle and Mariona Caldentey – returned to the squad, lifting the World Cup Trophy on Sunday.
While FIFA taking action is warranted and welcomed, Spain’s story and their triumph against all odds has opened up a wider discussion on the protection and treatment of women footballers from coaches and their own federations.
