Netflix has just announced a documentary detailing the Spain Women’s National Team’s boycott and World Cup journey is coming soon.

‘#SeAcabó: Diario de las Campeonas’ will tell the story of La Roja’s historic 2023 Women’s World Cup run, beginning with the boycott that started it all – Las 15’s letter.

In 2022, 15 players boycotted the national team after the RFEF sided with former coach Jorge Vilda over a dispute about his treatment of the team. Only three of the original 15 – Aitana Bonmatí, Ona Batlle and Mariona Caldentey – returned to the squad that lifted the World Cup Trophy last year.

At the World Cup medal ceremony, former RFEF president Luis Rubiales gave Jenni Hermoso a non-consensual kiss on the lips, kickstarting a widespread social protest – #SeAcabó – and the unearthing of years of systemic misogyny within the federation.

The post-tournament movement was one of the biggest and most widely-documented protests the women’s game has seen in recent years, if not ever. It pressured the RFEF to make necessary changes, but also caused other teams and federations to look introspectively and see where they were coming short in regards to women’s football.

Now, for the first time, the players are telling their story. The documentary focuses on the players’ perspectives, giving them the chance to share their experiences unfiltered.

‘#SeAcabó: Diario de las Campeonas’ will be released on Netflix on November 1.
