Louis Vuitton have officially announced that Pharrell Williams will take on the role of Men's Creative Director.
Williams will be the first person to hold down the position full-time since the passing of Virgil Abloh in 2021. In a recent statement, the brand described the NERD frontman as "a visionary whose creative universes expand from music to art, and to fashion."
The question of who was to take on the role - one of the most high-profile in fashion - had been asked for months. The likes of British designers Grace Wales Bonner and Martine Rose were names supposedly being considered, as well KidSuper's Colm Dillane who was guest Creative Director for LV's FW23 collection last month. This won't be Williams' first time working with a luxury fashion brand, though.
The musician, producer and fashion designer became Chanel's first male ambassador back in 2014 and prior to that, even collaborated with Louis Vuitton on two collections in 2004 and 2008. It also won't be the first time Williams will be looking to bring his eccentric style to one of fashion's powerhouses.
Since 2016, Williams' Humanrace brand has collaborated with adidas on a series of sportswear-inspired collections, with the two unveiling a range of archive-inspired kits for Arsenal, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Bayern and Juventus in 2020.
Williams' appointment is a demonstration of LVMH's continued commitment to the streetwear-focused ethos set out by the late Virgil. And with Williams' previous experience in the football space, and LV being one of the most loved brands amongst footballers - shoutout to Héctor Bellerín's LV 2019 runway show - can we expect to see another football collaboration on the cards? Only time will tell.
Williams' first collection will be debuted at Paris Fashion Week in June next year.
