Acne Studios first revealed a pink and white, candy cane-striped jersey last summer, and now that it’s finally available to purchase, the Swedish label is giving your favourite clubs a run for their money.
The football-inspired jersey is simply a work of art, taking design cues from vintage kits to bring a 20th century feel to 2020s fashion. The satin fabric is decorated with an intricate jacquard pattern, subtly detailed with blooming flowers to mark the season. Thin and thick stripes alternate to create a look that screams ‘fashion!’ more than it does ‘sport!’
Even the colourway is masterful. The light, rosy pink mixed with the slightly off-white shade plays into the vintage design. ‘Acne Studios’ is printed in curving script across the chest in brown, with the number 13 sitting near the bottom left, similar to retro North American Soccer League kits.
Instead of a traditional crest, Acne Studios’ Stockholm headquarters are stitched in lace. If it wasn’t already clear, this kit isn’t for the football traditionalists.
High fashion brands have been dabbling in football for years now, making everything from footy scarves to astroturfs to jerseys. Prada and adidas’ boot collaboration last year took luxury football to a whole new on-pitch level, but Acne Studios have kept their finger on the pulse for nearly a decade when it comes to the overlapping cultures of fashion and football.
This kit is just another display of that expertise. This isn’t the Swedish brand’s first foray into the world of football, after years of kits and footwear that could cure society’s longing for the return of Total 90s. It certainly won’t be the last.
Acne Studios’ latest kit is available to purchase on the brand’s website and select retailers.
